“What’s Up” is a flash fiction piece about a character I was developing for a novel.
She came to his office with a bounce in her step. Chin up and shoulders back, a slight smile escaping her professional demeanor.
At her two quick raps to the doorframe he looked up from the desk momentarily puzzled at her cheerfulness as she bounded in.
“Please close the door and sit.” His somberness surprised her.
“You wanted to see me?”
“It’s about the Jacobsen account”
“I was hoping you’d notice that. Have you seen their additional orders?”
“When did they place that order?”
“Yesterday”
“They just called to cancel it this morning.”
Her mouth opened and eyes widened. “But we, we went out to celebrate last night.”
“What did you do in one night to lose the account we all worked months to get?”
Her palms went over her eyes before she drew her fingers down her face.
“Do you remember what happened last night?”
She looked past his shoulder, through the darkened window that overlooked the cubicles. She saw her colleague pat the man’s shoulder next to him. Both were smirking, no he was grinning.
“What happened!”
“I… I’m not sure.”
“What do you mean you’re not sure? This was the account of the decade!”
Her colleague had one hand behind his head, the other holding an imaginary microphone with his hips starting to gyrate wildly.
“It’s all a little fuzzy I guess.”
“Well let this be clear. Security is at your office. They’ll escort you out of the building.”
As she stood, her colleague was holding his stomach, doubled up laughing.
